Docuo in Engineering: Common Data Environment (CDE) for BIM
One of the areas where Docuo is commonly applied is managing documents in engineering projects, whether in the design of products and facilities or in handling documentation for production.
In this kind of project, document management is key in many respects:
– Editing documents.
– Review and comments from the team and sometimes from outside parties.
– Version control.
– Efficient distribution to stakeholders.
In the design and construction of infrastructure (buildings), the problem gets more complicated, because further difficulties are added:
– A large number of “players” involved (Owner, Contractors, Suppliers, Maintenance Companies and so on).
– Physical distance between the different participants, which matters especially on international projects.
– A high number of documents of very different types.
– Project-based work in which there is no stable team; participants “come and go” depending on the phase of the project.
Years ago, work was done to standardise information management in infrastructure projects, so as to allow an orderly flow of documentation and simple, error-free collaboration between participants. That effort took shape in the BIM (Building Information Modelling) methodology and the ISO 19650 standard.
BIM is a collaborative working methodology for creating and managing a construction project. Its aim is to centralise all the project information in a digital model created by all of its agents.
BIM is the evolution of traditional design systems based on drawings, since it not only incorporates geometric information (3D), it also adds schedules, costs, environmental management and even the rest of the building’s life cycle (maintenance).
Without going into detail, the BIM methodology seeks collaboration between the actors on a project using two sources of information: a graphical model of the infrastructure using the IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) standard and a centralised repository for the rest of the documentation, known as the CDE (Common Data Environment).
Docuo has developed a documentation management platform for BIM (CDE) in line with the ISO 19650 standard.
