OCR is dead: long live Artificial Intelligence

For decades, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) has been the go-to technology for turning physical documents into digital data. Yet OCR as we know it is giving way to a new titan: Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The problems with OCR

On paper, OCR is a powerful tool. It turns images of text into editable text, making it easier to digitise documents and extract their “metadata”. For example, given a scanned image of a supplier invoice, it can pull out the supplier’s tax ID, their details, the taxable base, the invoice total and its date, all to be entered into an invoicing tool.

This technology is not without its limitations, though. One of the most significant is the need to create specific templates for each type or format of document. That approach works, but it is rigid and eats up a great deal of time and resources.

If initiatives such as electronic invoicing or data exchange via API were already calling into question the supposed profitability of OCR systems, all that was missing was the final blow for this technology.

The arrival of AI in document recognition and understanding
